Plants and rocks are a feature of ornamental ponds and, once everything has established itself, these ponds look very natural. Although fiber glass can be used successfully in irregularly, shaped ponds, it may be more convenient to use a butyl rubber liner.

Butyl stretches well to fit unusual shapes, but folds or creases are almost impossible to avoid. Small fish can hide in these folds and occasionally fatalities occur if they are unable to get out.

Detritus can also accumulate in these folds, making cleaning difficult. Given careful design, fiber glass is probably a better lining in order to avoid these potential problems. Many ornamental ponds are in ground and do not lend themselves to hand feeding koi.

The presence of water plants makes cleaning the shelves and pond bottom time consuming, as well as awkward. Any plants in an ornamental pond will need protection. Koi are natural bottom feeders and will grub around in plant pots and eat the plants as well.

Many years ago I dug by hand a extremely difficult and large hole to put an inground pool into. Being in the colder climates of Australia the pool didn't get much use as the water was icey even on peak summer days. So I built a 60 watt solar pyramid above the pool and engineered a solar powered solar heater interlocking gravity and solar into the one concept. The whole thing here is that the sun powers the pump which fills the bucket and thru gravity the pressure builds and the water is forced thru sun heated radiant coil pipes and then the heated water is returned back to the pool. To my knowledge I don't think anyone has done that before, sure there are heaps of mains powered pumps to circulate pool water thru and there are solar thermosyphon solar hot water systems around, but not a polycrystalline photovoltaic powered heater that direct converts the sun into electricity to drive a pump and then using the sun again the water is heated and returned back to the pool. I think it's quite clever as it bypasses the traditional problems and makes a nice heated fountain for the pool that costs nothing to run and makes a wonderful water feature in the backyard.
